Life often introduces us to a variety of people- casual friends strangers we pass on the street or coworkers we see every day, and while these relationships may seem fleeting. They can leave a profound mark on our lives, but when we face sudden loss of these individuals, it prompts a haunting question: Did we say the right things before they were gone?

The Impact of Casual Connections

Every encounter no matter how brief, has the potential for significance. It could be engaging in small talk with the barista who makes our morning coffee or sharing a laugh with a coworker. These exchanges while seemingly casual, shape our days, and remind us of our shared humanity. They add color to our lives, but when loss strikes, we may find ourselves wishing we had expressed more.

The Power our Words carry

As Christians, we believe that our words hold power. Scripture tells us that the tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21) in light of this, it’s crucial to consider what we communicate to others, especially in casual encounters. Did we take the opportunity to really share the love of Jesus. How about words of kindness and encouragement. Did we let them know they mattered even in those brief moments.

I sometimes think about old friends from my past that have passed on and our last conversations together. I sit and think is there something else more that I could have said? That could’ve helped them in this life before they left?

Dealing with regrets

When we lose, someone, it’s common to be haunted by regrets. The “what- ifs” can creep in asking if we could have done or said something differently. Perhaps there was a moment to share a heartfelt compliment or to express interest in their lives. Remember that these feelings are natural, but it’s important to reconcile them with our faith. We are not perfect, and we can’t always anticipate the importance of a moment.

Being intentional

Instead of dwelling in regret, we can choose to be intentional with our words moving forward. Let’s make an effort to express care and correction. A simple smile, a compliment or a thoughtful question about someone’s day can be “huge!” You never know how a kind word can uplift someone or leave a lasting impression.

Finding Comfort in Faith

When loss hits is easy to feel overwhelmed and lost ourselves. Our faith can provide comfort during these painful times, knowing that God has a plan even when we don’t understand it can help us find peace. Through prayer and remembrance we can honor those we’ve lost and celebrate the moments share together.

Conclusion…

Life is fleeting and so are our interactions with others. As we find our way through our days let’s strive to be bold in expressing love, kindness and Faith. Take the time to connect, to share a smile, and to say the words that may uplift others. We never know the impact we can make in someone’s life with just a few spoken words let’s embrace each encounter with intention, remembering that tomorrow is never promised.

So the next time you find yourself in a conversation, be present, be kind, and let your words reflect the love of Christ. After all, we all have a story to tell, and sometimes perhaps our words can be the very light someone needs.
